If you were offered a key that could unlock your ability to move forward in your life, would you take it? What if I told you that this key already exists within you and that all you need to do is discover and use it?
Well, there is indeed a way to get unstuck and that way is to overcome limiting beliefs. Beliefs are assumptions we make about ourselves, about others, and about situations. To put it broadly, beliefs guide how we expect things to be in the world. They’re the lenses we look through that dictate how we feel, behave, and respond to things that happen around us.
HOW DOES IT START
As children, we learned how to think and feel about many things from people around us, — parents, grandparents, teachers, friends, etc. As adults, we continue to believe and operate on some of these thoughts and ideas as if they are true…even though they may be far from the truth.
As a result, these limiting beliefs can keep you stuck, leaving you unhappy about your life. In your mind, you want things to be different, but you’re stuck in the same miserable condition. You might tell yourself:
I’m not good enough – I’m bad at making friends – I’ll never make enough money – I don’t deserve better – I’m too old or too – I’m incompetent
These negative messages are deeply rooted in your unconscious mind. It takes conscious effort to uproot them so they will no longer determine your quality of life.
ELEPHANTS AND LIMITING BELIEFS?!
You may have heard the story of how circus elephants are trained to stay in one place. It’s a great analogy for the way limiting beliefs affect us. When the elephants are young, they are tied to a post with a rope that they can’t break, no matter how hard they try. This happens again and again, until the elephants give up trying to break free. Once they’re fully grown, they never even try to escape, even though they are certainly strong enough to break the rope. Why? Because they’ve been conditioned to believe they cannot break away.
Do you hold on to old beliefs that no longer serve you? Has your life changed, but have your beliefs remained the same? The good news is that you don’t have to behave like an elephant. You have the ability to break FREE of the thoughts holding you in bondage!
HOW I DOUBTED MYSELF
For many years I’ve told myself that I’m not a good writer. Never mind that I got positive feedback from college professors who told me how much they liked my writing. Never mind that family members come to me when they need help in writing. For the past two years, I’ve wanted to write a blog and could never bring myself to take that step. It has taken this long because I was not comfortable opening myself up to possible criticism by others.
The mistake I made is that I compared my writing to that of others who are much better writers than I am. What I know now is that I don’t have to be the best to be good. I just have to do the best I can and be willing to move outside my comfort zone. And because I did that, you’re reading my first blog post!
You can take the same steps I took to overcome your limiting beliefs. If this blog inspired you to want to take action to move forward in your life, contact me. You’ll be glad you did!
